We believe that since Jesus’ death and resurrection, he has been living and working with God in heaven

A Quick Look

The Bible tells us that Jesus is currently ‘at the right hand of God’

Mark 16:19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.

This doesn’t make a statement about what, if anything, he doing while he is there.  We know Jesus will return when it is God’s right time for that to happen, but what about all the years he has been waiting for that?  What is he doing?

Rom. 8:34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

So what is involved in ‘making intercession’?  This surely describes the way in which Jesus works on our behalf – by his perfection making us perfect, such that we are able to please God.  It is to do with the effectiveness of our responses to God’s love – in thought and prayer and action.  Jesus makes sure that what God receives is pure, unsullied by sin.  This is a necessary work  - the work of our eternal High Priest - until those who believe are made eternal, when temptation will be gone and they will sin no more.

A Personal Analysis

It is hard to make a conclusive argument about many religious things – after all, if you could, there would be no room for belief, and belief is clearly an essential part of God’s requirement of each of us that want His love shown towards us.  There are not a great number of scriptures that speak of Jesus’ work now, but there are enough for us to conclude reasonably confidently that his current task involves the ongoing covering of our sin so that we can talk to and work for God without it being a terrible offence to Him.  Sin is a very serious thing, and God, living in eternity, is unable to tolerate it.  There is no direct communication between God and those who are sinful.  That direct communication stopped when Adam and Eve took the fruit of the forbidden tree.

So we suggest, therefore, that the current work of Jesus is the keep open that line of communication between us and God, by being that one who stands alongside us to present us to God.  Whether this work is active, or more theoretical, is impossible to say, but what we can say without doubt, surely, is that it is motivated by the greatest love any of us have ever known or seen.

More Detailed Bible Teaching

This is not a subject about which the Bible has a great many passages, but there are enough to be sure that Jesus is indeed currently in heaven, at God’s right hand.  We can also be sure that the purpose of this is one of intercession – of intervention, mediation, arbitration, perhaps even negotiation on our part to ensure that our prayers, actions, thoughts, motives etc. are presented to God in a way He will find acceptable.  We also know that he has been given power – even over the angels.  Here are all of the verses that speak of this:

Mark 16:19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.

Acts 2:33 "Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

Heb. 10:12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,

Acts 7:55 But he [Stephen], being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
56 and said, "Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!"

Rom. 8:34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Col. 3:1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.

1Pet. 3:22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.
