And they’re off! The starting pistol has been fired and the race begins to select the next leader of our country.
During election campaigns many promises are made and even if we feel excited by the prospect of a world with everything put right by the politicians and the government in power, we know from experience that very few, if any of these promises will be kept whichever political party is in power. So who can we trust to change the world into a better, peaceful and fair place to live?
The Bible is full of examples of men and women breaking promises they have made to other people and to God. It also holds much advice on who to believe and who to trust. Here are a couple of examples.
The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The LORD is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. (Psalms 118) Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry.
Leaders of the world come and go. They are human like us. They promise things they cannot fulfil. The God who created this world has promised many wonderful things to those who listen to him and put their trust in him. He has promised to send his Son Jesus back to this world to put it right and to set up his kingdom of peace and righteousness and we can trust that it will happen because he has said it will.
Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.
