Hebrews Chapter 13 verse 8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever.
We live our lives on shifting sands. Things change continually. Nothing stays the same for long. Governments change. Laws change. Fashions change. We change. We are surrounded by unfamiliar ideas which replace the things we thought we knew.
This verse gives us an anchor travelling in those uncertain seas of life – the storms, the big waves that rock us, the flat calm, the unexpected whirlpool.
What it tells us is that the message of salvation through Jesus Christ has not changed since Jesus delivered it. Some people think they can change it to suit their wishes but here we are told whatever Jesus was, he still is and always will be.
The next verse after this one tells us ‘Do not be carried about with various doctrines.’ Don’t believe anything else you are told. What Jesus has told us about salvation in his name has not changed and is not going to. It’s not about to disappear and be re-invented in a more up-to-date way. It is always there for us to take and is straightforward to understand. Perhaps then we need to take note and for those who feel anxious and insecure in life be assured by the permanence of ‘Jesus Christ – the same yesterday, today and forever.’
