Spring will always follow winter (as God promised) and with Spring comes the urge to clean and de-clutter. De-cluttering is SO satisfying!
It is not a new idea. In fact it is mentioned in the Bible – not about old clothes and accumulated stuff, but about the rubbish that collects in our minds which influences what we say and how we behave. We are bombarded all day by noise, information, false ideas, unhealthy advice, as well as the bad examples and influences absorbed from the media. We need to de-clutter our lives, throw out what is harmful, keep and value what is good, if we are to find peace of mind.
Jesus had a lot to say about this: ‘The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings out evil things from the evil stored up in his heart’ (Luke 6. 45)
‘If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.’ (Mark 9. 47) Jesus is not here suggesting maiming ourselves. ( Jesus often used exaggeration [hyperbole] to get his hearers thinking.) He is saying that we should get rid of anything we look at ( nowadays that may be magazines, books, TV. etc) that will clutter us up with bad influences and corrupt us. We are urged instead to be wise in our choices: ‘Wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her’.
Bible Proverbs say, ‘Listen and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path’ ‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom’.
