The start of another New Year. We love the opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start again don’t we? Forget what went wrong last year. It’ll be much better this year! I’m not going to make the same mistakes again. This is a fresh start in my life. Then there are those dreaded words we hear all around us on January 1st – New Year Resolutions. What will they be this year? Will my resolve last longer this year than last? It’s very easy to set ourselves impossible targets and then fall at the first hurdle and feel disappointed that we couldn’t achieve them.
Perhaps it is time to make some real resolutions in our life. The sort that actually mean something and are worthwhile. Not just a new start but a complete change. Ask ourselves a few hard questions – Why am I here? What should I spend my life doing? How can I make my life and the life of those around me better? How can I make my life worthwhile? Can I live forever? These are big questions and they need some serious searching to find the answers. If we ask God all of these questions we discover that he has answered them for us in His word, the Bible. If we pray for help to find the answers they are there to be found.
Here are just a few answers:
Isaiah 45 vs 18 ‘ for thus says the Lord who created the heavens, who is God, who formed the earth and made it, who has established it, who did not create it in vain, who formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord and there is no other.’
Luke 10 v 27 ‘ love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, with all your mind and your neighbour as yourself.’
John 3 v 16. ‘God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten son that whoever believes on him should not perish but have everlasting life.’
Acts 2 v 38 ‘ Repent and let every one of you be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins ‘
This year let’s all make the biggest change in our lives and start to listen to what God has to say about the world and our future in it. Let’s make a New Year Resolution to listen, learn and then, most importantly of all, act on what we find out.
A Happy New Year to you. We pray that this will be the year that Jesus returns to the earth and that we will be watching and ready to meet him.
