Let there be light

Maybe like me you are starting to notice that at last our daylight hours are beginning to lengthen. In the morning when I get up it is not as dark, and conversely in the evening I don’t need to switch the lights on so early in the afternoon. I am looking forward to having more daylight, my mood becomes lighter with the knowledge that Spring is on its way.

Light is a key theme throughout the Bible. In the beginning God said “Let there be light” And God saw that the light was good. In scripture light is associated with goodness and darkness with evil – it is easier to do harm, to do evil works, to steal when you can’t be seen.

Psalm 18:28 says “You, Lord keep my lamp burning: my God turns my darkness into light”

As human beings I think it might be fair to say that we prefer sunshine, bright days, longer days rather than the short days of winter. God shows Jesus to us as the Light of the World, we just need to recognise that this very special light can show us a better way – Matthew ch 5:16 “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven “
