Everything these days is either too fast or too slow. The traffic is too fast if you’re trying to cross the road or two slow if you’re late for an appointment. Time spent with special friends flies by too fast. Time spent on your own goes far too slowly. Holidays whizz by. Have we got to wait till the same time next year till we can go on holiday again? Work days and study days go so slowly. Will the day ever end? It’s the clock ticking too fast or too slowly. Our lives tick by like a clock and, depending on what we are doing, life passes by in a blur and we realise that we are growing old too fast or it seems never ending loneliness and pain as the clock ticks slowly.
We are told in the Bible that time isn’t like that with God. It says that it’s all the same to him as he works his purpose out – ‘one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years is as one day.’ He is giving us all plenty of time to learn about him and his wonderful offer of everlasting life in his kingdom – a world with no hurrying. A world with no end – but one day he will call time on his offer. One day soon he has promised that it will be the last day of this present life.
God also has some very comforting words for those of us stressed by the lack of time to fit everything in. It’s worth taking a deep breath and remembering these comforting words:
‘Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth! ‘ Psalms 46 v10
