Imagine if forty very different people in different places and circumstances, spread over a period of about 1800 years, each wrote what they knew and believed. Imagine that afterwards someone compiled all those writings (translated) into one book. What would you expect the result to be? Most likely it would be a varied and uncoordinated assortment of topics, styles, opinions and beliefs.
However, there is one book of 66 documents, written in exactly that way and the result is not a mish-mash but an amazing, cohesive book with life-changing themes and principles which run consistently through from beginning to end. How could that possibly be? The answer is given in the book – the Apostle Peter wrote, ‘No prophecy of Scripture (sacred writings) is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke (or wrote) as they were moved by the Holy Spirit’ (2 Peter 1, 20-21)
So the writings which comprise the BIBLE were directed by God; they tell of God’s character and his dealings with and purpose for the earth and the people on it. It is his invitation to all people in every age to become part of that purpose, which is to fill the earth with justice and peace and love, to be brought about by his Son, Jesus Christ, when he returns from heaven as King.
