Mirror mirror on the wall

When we get out of bed in the morning one of the very first things we do is look in the mirror, usually in great trepidation, wondering whether we have the time and ability to create order out of the havoc that a night of sleep has caused! The reflection in the mirror is the closest we get to seeing ourselves as others see us, albeit the wrong way round as a reflection. We are our own biggest critic when we look at this reflection and realise that we will never look like the great beauties of the world or the ideal image we are constantly shown in the media that we are supposed to conform to, unless of course we are rather vain and like what we see. Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder, and this world is full of people who love themselves!

A reflection in a mirror is only an image of what we look like on the outside. It generally bears no relation to the person we are inside. We can convey an image of a sweet and happy person, whilst hiding dark thoughts towards our fellow men. The people around us can be taken in by this false image but of course there is one who is not. God looks on the inside and sees what really lies in our hearts. He knows our characters whether they be good or bad, kind or mean, honest or corrupt. God shines a light into our hearts and asks us to look deeply into them to see if we can see the perfect image of his Son Jesus and make us realise that we have a lot to measure up to before we can begin to think we are perfect too.

We need to keep this perfect image of Jesus in front of us instead of our own reflection and realise that we have a lot of work to do to even come near to that perfection. We need to read what God wants us to do in his word, the Bible. Here are just a few to get us started:

Psalms 139 v 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

1 Samuel 16 v 7 The Lord said…..do not look at his appearance or his physical stature…..for the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart.

Jeremiah 17 vs 10 I the Lord search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.
